Interview with Pixie Jarvis from Outside In, and Healing Trauma with Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
“What is equine-assisted psychotherapy? Do horses need therapy? Or is it people?” Pixie Jarvis talks with Dr. Sharon Blevins about equine-assisted psychotherapy and the healing power of animals.
Horses, being prey animals, are incredibly intuitive and extremely aware of their environment. They are also non-verbal, which makes them masters at reading body language. Horses are honest yet nonjudgmental. They live in the moment. Being herd animals, they are social creatures with distinct personalities, moods, and attitudes. Horses feel the safest with us when we are regulated and present.
Exploring how horses help humans heal is Pixie’s calling. In her work with equine-assisted psychotherapy, Pixie has witnessed first-hand the positive effects of utilizing animals in relationship building, healing, and therapy.
