BOOK REVIEW The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This novel is still sizzling in my thoughts days after the last page. The spicy allure of movie star Evelyn Hugo is bound to be the character you’ll love to hate as you get a front row seat at the mysterious retelling of her life story. Strangely enough, she selects Monique Grant, a low rung magazine reporter to disclose the events of her life to – the intimate and controversial sides no one has ever heard. The offer is bound to make Monique a wealthy young woman with the exclusive reveal everyone has been waiting for. Monique is enthralled and wary of this glamorous woman and the unusual level of trust she is extending. The reasons behind this exchange remain unclear and unpredictable until the final details of Hugo’s story. A story that Monique is in charge of telling, or will she?
Reid’s realistic and well-researched description of Hugo’s bizarre Hollywood escapades show how tough choices are often part of the lives of the famous. The sacrifices actors had to make in the 50’s and 60’s were magnified by the long list of unacceptable behaviors of those days. If you enjoy hearing a unique rags to riches story with a surprising and satisfying end, you are going to stay up late with this one.
